A Woman bathing in a Stream (Hendrickje Stoffels?)
Here Rembrandt depicts a woman lifting her dress as she begins to bathe, calf deep in a stream. It is thought that the woman is Hendrickje Stoffles, Rembrandt’s common-law wife and mother to his daughter, Cornelia. Rembrandt and Hendrickje Stoffles lived together from around 1649 until her death. The work has an unfinished quality that is atypical of Rembrandt’s works; however, the work was indeed finished for it is signed and dated.
