Road in the Village of Baldersbrønde (Winter Day)
This Impressionist work is among a series that Monet completed of the Gare St. Lazare. In January 1877 he moved to a flat near the train station, and turned his attention to the structure as subject matter. Here the plein-aire of Impressionism clashes with the reality of industrialization as Monet manages to create an interior landscape. The overwhelming smoke has the effect of clouds in the sky, as loose brushstrokes give movement to the busy train platforms.
