The Fighting Temeraire

J.M.W. Turner is credited with elevating the status of landscape painting to a more respected subject, on par with history and military works. This beautiful representation of the ship, the Temeraire, heading into a setting sun, suggesting perhaps the end of the ship’s life cycle, and perhaps the overall decline of British naval might. Despite this melancholy tone, the painting renders a stunning seascape.
