Winter Landscape

Here Friedrich uses perspective and depth to layer religious symbolism with the landscape to render the salvation possible through Christianity. The evergreen trees in the foreground may symbolize faith, for an elderly man sit in front of a rock and prays to a crucifix amidst these tree. The mans crutches lay abandoned in the snow, as he has taken in his faith. A Gothic cathedral appears through the thick snow in the background, symbolizing the promise of salvation after death.
